I learned this the hard way.
Your business won't hold on its own. Someone has to build the structure before you step away.
One year, I wanted a total break for three weeks over the holidays. I had made no plans. No coverage, no scheduled content, no follow-up in place, nothing set up to run without me.
So while everyone around me was celebrating, I was working, putting out fires I could have prevented. I hardly slept. I woke up grumpy, with terrible headaches, and I carried that mood into my time with the people I love.
At some point, I seriously considered not opening the business the following year. For the first time, my business felt like a hindrance to the freedom-fueled life I preached, and I felt ashamed that I wasn't living what I taught.
All because I hadn't planned ahead.
The next time, I had a plan.
I took a true break and was fully present for it. That was the result I had wanted all along.
There was one catch. Because I stepped away completely, I came back to a cold audience and had to warm it up from scratch. That is why this plan also covers staying visible while you rest, and planning your return.
I have also helped clients step away to rest and be more present with their families.
Set things up early, and the break becomes calm. Wait until the last minute, and it becomes a scramble. So the real question isn't, "Can I afford to take time off?"
